Atatürk Dam is the largest rock fill dam built in Turkey as part of the integrated South Eastern Anatolia Project. Keban Dam, built in 1970’s, and Karakaya Dam, built in 1980’s are situated on the upstream of Euphrates.,
Atatürk Dam is built to supply:
- Hydropower for national interconnected energy supply system
- Water for irrigation of Harran Plain
- Drinking water for City of Sanliurfa and Edene Group of 300 villages located between Sanliurfa and Syrian border. Drinking water resources are very limited in the region, therefore Euphrates is valuable and its drinking water quality needs to be maintained and/or improved.
The scope of this study is to determine quantitatively current discharge of pollutants, immediate measures needed for rehabilitation, physical planning of future development to maintain/improve drinking water quality of the water in the reservoir.
